During my 2018 spring semester at CCU I took a class called Instructional Technology. During this class I was presented with the opportunity to create a virtual field trip for students. This is a great way for students to explore what this world has to offer by staying in the classroom. Below is the virtual field trip I have planned for a third grade social studies class. The standard I based this trip off of is an Ohio third grade social studies standard that says “Primary sources such as artifacts, maps, and photographs can be used to show change over time.” I take the students through the middle ages as we explore how different the world was back then compared to todays society. You can find the work sheet (travel guide) that goes with the field here.

Third Grade social studies:
Hello class! Today we are going to go on a virtual field trip. Today we are going back in time to the middle ages! Did you know that the time between the 5th and the 15th century were considered the middle ages? This time period has a couple of different names- Middle ages, Medieval times, and the Dark ages. Follow the stops in order to explore this exciting topic. At each stop, be sure to fill out your travel guide on what you learned.

Take a look at these middle age coins. During the middle ages, they used different coins than anyone uses today. Fill out stop number four on your travel guide when you’re done.

Stop 5. Coat of Arms: http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/coat-of-arms-generator.php#.WlEPxUxFw2x
In the middle ages, the original purpose of a “coat of arms” was to mark warriors in battle by showing their symbols or badges on shields, flags and clothing. Today, I want you to follow the link to make your own “coat of arms” on a shield! Scroll down to the bottom of this page to find your very own crest.
